It is with profound sadness that Archipelago Hotels announces the passing of its Founder and Chairman, Mr. Charles Brookfield, on Monday, 29 June 2026, in Bali. Affectionately known as Pak Charley, he was a visionary entrepreneur whose leadership, integrity, and unwavering belief in Indonesia's hospitality industry laid the foundation for one of Southeast Asia's leading hotel management companies.
Founded in 2005, Archipelago Hotels began with the ambition of building an Indonesian hotel management company that could compete with the world's leading brands. Under his leadership, the company grew from a boutique operator into Southeast Asia's largest privately owned hotel management company, managing hundreds of hotels across Asia, the Middle East, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Beyond the company's success, Pak Charley will be remembered for his people-first leadership. He believed in empowering local talent, building lasting partnerships, and creating a culture of integrity, innovation, and excellence that continues to guide Archipelago today.
”Pak Charley was an exceptional leader whose vision, integrity, and genuine care for people helped shape Archipelago Hotels and all of us who had the privilege of working with him. His greatest legacy lives on in the people he inspired. May he rest in eternal peace,” said John Flood, CEO of Archipelago Hotels.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, management, and more than 20,000 colleagues worldwide, Archipelago Hotels extends its deepest condolences to Mr. Brookfield's family, friends, and loved ones. As the company mourns the loss of its founder, Archipelago Hotels remains committed to carrying forward the values of integrity, humility, and resilience that Pak Charley embodied. While he will be deeply missed, the culture he created and the confidence he inspired in others will continue to influence Archipelago Hotels for generations to come.
